Scope and content

Files covering the preparation and work of the Air Raid Precautions personnel in connection with defence. Many of the files deal with separate items of equipment, or with the different Civil Defence districts. These show the organisation and training of ARP wardens and other personnel.

The bulk of the files are for the year 1942 when Internal Sectors were created as a part of increased precautionary measures. Many firms or buildings were made internal sectors, that is, they were authorised to organise and carry out their own air raid precautions.

Files from 1944 onwards are mostly connected with the removal of war-time measures - sale of equipment, permission to remove protective coverings and the winding up of local civil defence groups.

1942 files with "CSD" after the file number refer to files from the Chief Secretary's Department which were handed over to the Civil Defence Department.
