The Department of Aboriginal Affairs (formerly Indigenous Affairs) was renamed to more accurately reflect the identity of Aboriginal people in Western Australia.
The Department was responsible for the development of policy, planning, and improved delivery of service to Aboriginal people, and promoting reconciliation and respect for Aboriginal history, heritage and culture. In addition, the Department managed places of significance to Aboriginal people in Western Australia, as well as the Aboriginal Lands Trust estate.
Following a change of Government and Machinery of Government restructure of the Western Australian public sector, effective from 1 July 2017, the functions of the Department were transferred to: the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage; the Department of Communities; the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries; and the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
