History
The Department of Local Government and Communities was designated on 1 July 2013 following the amalgamation of the Department of Local Government and the Department for Communities.
An interim organisational structure was in place from 1 July 2013 pending implementation of the final organisational structure on 1 July 2014. The State Heritage Office, part of the interim organisational structure for the Department, became a stand-alone government department on 1 July 2014.
The Department of Local Government and Communities was focused on improved collaboration between government agencies, not-for-profit organisations, and local governments, in the delivery of community services at the local level.
On 1 July 2017, the communities function of the Department of Local Government and Communities was assigned to the newly formed Department of Communities. The local government function of the Department, and its Office of Multicultural Interests, were assigned to the newly formed Department of Local Government, Sport and Industries.
