The Department of Transport  began operations on 1 July 2009, after the former Department for Planning and Infrastructure was split into three new agencies.
The Department of Transport, Main Roads Western Australia, and the Public Transport Authority comprise the State's Transport Portfolio. The Department of Transport takes a lead role in takes a lead role in integrating and enhancing coordination of the State’s transport operations, regulatory functions and planning and policy development processes.
Machinery of government changes in 2017 required increased inter-agency collaboration across the Transport portfolio.
