The Western Australian Art Gallery was established as a separate body following the passing of the Art Gallery Act in 1959. Previously the Art Gallery had been administered jointly with the Museum and prior to that with the Public Library and the Museum. Following a change of name in 1978, the Art Gallery became known as the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
