Scope and content

The files in this series were created by the Water Supply branch of the Public Works Department.

The origins of the Water Supply branch can be traced back to the development of the goldfields in the late 1880's and the need to provide a reliable water supply to that area.

By 1920 there were twenty one water areas constituted under the Water Boards Act 1904, most of which were controlled by Boards but the remainder of which came under the control of the Minister for Works.

(Files in this Record Series were previously listed at the State Records Office at reference: AN 7/WAT/1, Accession 1109; AN 7/WAT/2, Accession 1109; AN 7/WAT/3, Accession 1109; AN 7/WAT/5, Accession 1522; AN 7/WAT/9, Accession 1561; AN 7/WAT/12, Accession 1618; AN 7/WAT/14, Accession 1870).
