Longmore Remand and Assessment Centre was opened on 27 January 1965. It was designed to cater for boys and girls who were wards of the Department (of Child Welfare).
The two functions of Longmore:
Remand - to provide secure accommodation for children arrested and charged with offences, waiting to appear in court and for children remanded in custody for further court appearances.
Assessment - to provide assessment of children convicted by a court and placed under control of the Department. The child may be released after assessment or placed in a secure training centre (Longmore Training Centre, Riverbank or Nyandi - Nyandi closed in 1992).
Longmore, as part of the Youth Justice Bureau was transferred to the Ministry of Justice in 1993.
