The origins of the Western Australian Museum & Art Gallery can be traced back to 1860 when a sum of money was collected which formed the foundation for a museum which was attached to the Swan River Mechanic's Institute.
In 1881 a geological museum was set up in the old gaol at Fremantle under the control of the Minister for Mines. This collection was later combined with the Institute collection and opened to the public for the first time in 1891.
In 1895, control of the Museum & Art Gallery passed to a Committee.
