The Office of the Environmental Protection Authority was established as a separate Department of State on 27 November 2009. Its role was to support the Environmental Protection Authority in conducting environmental impact assessments and developing policies to protect the environment.
Under the McGowan Government, a series of Machinery of Government changes were made to the public sector creating a number of new amalgamated departments.
The Office of the Environmental Protection Authority, the Department of Water, and the Department of Environmental Regulation were amalgamated to form the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation on 1 July 2017.
