History

The Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services was established in June 2000 and became fully operational in December of that year. Its statutory obligation is to conduct triennial inspections of prisons in Western Australia. In addition, the Office is responsible for the inspection and review of other prison and custodial services, thematic reviews, reports to parliament, provision of community information and the administration of the Independent Prison Visitors Service.

When the Inspector of Custodial Services Act 2003 was enacted in 2003, the jurisdiction of the Office was extended to include juvenile detention centres.

The Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services was established in June 2000 under the Prisons Act 1981 and the Public Sector Management Act 1994. In 2003, the Inspector of Custodial Services Act 2003 was enacted to replace the earlier provisions in the Prisons Act 1981 and the Court Security and Custodial Services Act 1999.
