Administrative history
Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

Scope and content
The series includes a record of official visitors to the prison showing date, name of visitor and remarks (CONS 4287/1). The series also includes a file of correspondence (CONS 4305) concerning visitors to the prison. CONS 4323 contains reports by Visiting Justices on their visits of inspection. This is an artificial series created by the State Archives to include various records relating to official visitors to the prison and no further records in this series are expected.
