Administrative history
Formed in 1896, the Albany Road Board was responsible for the roads and rates in the area surrounding, but not including, the Port and Townsite of Albany. Over time, the Board's responsibilities grew to include a range of functions associated with municipal government such as roads and parks. In July 1961, all Road Boards in Western Australia were created as Shires.
