Administrative history

Formerly the Registrar General's and Government Statistician's Office within the Chief Secretary's Department. The two functions were split on 1 July 1957 and the Registrar General's Office was created to operate within the Chief Secretary's Department (until 1983). Civil registration of births, deaths and marriages has been compulsory in Western Australia since 1841.

Estray register of births and deaths registered by the Narrogin Assistant District Registrar and forwarded to the William District Registrar.

District Registrar's would send all registered information on births, deaths and marriages to the Registrar-General who maintains the master set of births, deaths and marriages in Western Australia.
