Administrative history
Formerly the Department of Works & Buildings, the Public Works Department expanded greatly from the beginning of the century, becoming responsible for the construction of the Goldfields Water Supply and Fremantle harbour. The Public Works Department changed its name to the Building Management Authority on 1 January 1985.

Registers to field books and land books of surveys of the following: Railways, Metropolitan Sewerage & Drainage, Country Water Supply, Harbours and Rivers, Irrigation Schemes. The Fieldbooks to which these registers refer are listed in WAS 85. The listing of book numbers for this Consignment indicates those books that have survived and have been transferred to the State Archives. The Registers also provide a partial listing of the contents of WAS 84. The latter comprises Fieldbooks of Metropolitan Water Sewerage and Drainage Surveys that were top numbered with WSD and MWSS & DD numbers after 1910.
The latter numbers are recorded in the 'Remarks' column of the Registers.
