Administrative history

Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

Returns for the Cellular Division showing religious state of prisoners. Entries are daily and are number of probation prisoners, reconvicted prisoners, local prisoners and ticket of leave men who are protestant or catholic. There are no names, this is a statistical register. From 16 November 1903 statistics are further broken down to show number of Baptist, Wesleyan, Congregational, Presbyterian, Church of Christ, Lutheran, Jews, Confucian, Salvation Army and Mohamedan.
