On 13 May 1925, the Hounourables Alexander James Reid M.L.A., Alexander Hugh Panton M.L.A. and Walter Richardson M.L.A. were appointed Royal Commissioners to inquire into the conditions prevailing in the wholesale and retail trades in articles of food of general consumption, and in goods or commodities in general use, including clothing, so far as they affect prices, particularly having regard to the cost to producers, merchants and retailers, and to the difference between the prices received by producers, merchants and retailers and the prices paid by consumers; and also into the fairness of rents of dwelling houses of four, five and six rooms in the metropolitan area; and to report upon what remedial action or legislation can be usefully taken or proposed.
On 3 June 1925, the Honourables Vernon Hamersley M.L.C. and William Henry Kitson M.L.C were appointed additional Royal Commissioners.
The report of the Royal Commission was completed on 30 March 1926.
