Administrative history

Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

Scope and content

Registers of offences by prisoners dealt with by the Superintendent. Shows date, registration number, name, complaint (name of officer), statement of offence, sentence. Under Section 77 of the Prisons Act 1981 there were several options available to the Superintendent. These included caution, reprimand, forfeiture of period of remission of sentence, cancellation of gratuities, confinement in prisoners' sleeping quarters, referral to visiting justice.
