Administrative history
The Board constituted by the Main Roads Act 1925 consisted of three members appointed by the Governor. Two members were to be qualified engineers, and third a skilled administrator. The Board was empowered to provide and set out main roads. The Board was abolished by the Main Roads Act 1930.

The Main Roads Department, in co-operation with Local Government, develops and manages the State road network as part of a total transportation system.
The Department of Transport (established on 1 July 2009), Main Roads Western Australia, and the Public Transport Authority comprise the State's current Transport Portfolio. The Office of Road Safety was transferred from the Department of Premier and Cabinet on 1 July 2009.
