The Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW) commenced operations on 1 July 2013 following the restructure of the former Department of Environment and Conservation into (DPAW) and the Department of Environmental Regulation (DER).
The Department's primary responsibilities were to manage the state’s national parks, marine parks, State forests and other reserves, conserve and protect native animals and plants, and manage access to and use of the state’s wildlife and natural areas.
Under the McGowan Government, a series of Machinery of Government changes were made to the public sector creating a number of new amalgamated departments. The Department of Parks and Wildlife, along with the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, the Rottnest Island Authority, and the Zoological Parks Authority were amalgamated on 1 July 2017 to form The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
