Following the abolition of the Waterways Commission, the Water and Rivers Commission was created on 1 January 1996. The Water and Rivers Commission was established through the merging of the Western Australian Water Resources Council, the Water Resources Division of the Water Authority, the Hydrogeology and Groundwater Resources Branch of the Department of Minerals and Energy and the Waterways Commission.
The Commission was responsible for the management of the State's water resources.
The Water and Rivers Commission ceased to operate on 31 December 2007 and the functions of the Commission were transferred to a new department, the Department of Water.
