Administrative history
Formerly the Registrar General's and Government Statistician's Office within the Chief Secretary's Department. The two functions were split on 1 July 1957 and the Registrar General's Office was created to operate within the Chief Secretary's Department (until 1983). Civil registration of births, deaths and marriages has been compulsory in Western Australia since 1841.

Scope and content
A computerized system for the registration of births, deaths and marriages was started in 1984 as an ongoing system. It records and provides copies of registration details. Individual birth, death and marriage records are updated when required. The original record is kept and an updated version created and kept when an amendment is made. Members of the public may apply to the Registrar General's Office for copies of certificates for a fee.
