In October 1974 the Western Australian Cabinet approved the formation of an Executive Committee to take charge of the 150th anniversary celebrations. A number of committees were then formed to represent various community interests.

The Executive Committee was disbanded in 1978, when it was felt that the planning stage had been completed, and the 150th Anniversary Board was formed from 1 August 1978. The various Committees formed under the original Executive Committee continued to operate. The Board was finally wound up on 15 February 1980.
