The Western Australian Department of Training was established on 1 December 1993 following the amalgamation of the Department of Employment, Vocational Education and Training (DEVET), and the State Employment and Skills Development Authority.
The Department's strategic focus was the development and performance of the vocational education and training sector. A key objective was the development of a diverse and competitive training market through a state-wide network of autonomous colleges and private training providers.
In July 1999, the Western Australian Department of Training changed its name to the Department of Training and Employment, to reflect its role in providing employment advice and assistance to local communities.
