History

On 26 November 1963, the Hon. Norman Eric Baxter M.L.C. (Chair), the Hon. Ronald Thompson M.L.C. and the Hon. R.C. Mattiske M.L.C. were appointed as members of a Select Committee to inquire into the Fisheries Act, with particular reference to the crayfishing industry. On 4 December 1963, the Hon. R.C. Mattiske M.L.C. withdrew from the Committee and the Hon. Sydney Thomas Joseph Thompson M.L.C. was appointed to fill the vacancy. On 25 February, the Select Committee was converted to a Royal Commission to:

1) Inquire into the Fisheries Act, 1905-1962, in its particular application to the crayfishing industry in Western Australia; and

2) Make recommendations considered necessary to safeguard the future of the fishing grounds and the industry generally.
