The Shire of Ashburton, following annexations and severances of land (See: Government Gazette 28 April 1972 p. 917) was united with the Shire of Tableland to form the Shire of West Pilbara. The Shire of West Pilbara changed its name on 18 December 1987 to the Shire of Ashburton [2].
