The Western Australian Teachers Registration Board held its inaugural meeting on 23/03/1977 following the assent of the Teachers Registration Act on 10 September 1976. The Act provided for the registration of teachers to ensure that work within th teaching profession was undertaken only by competent persons. The Board was constituted to establish, maintain and operate the registration system. In October 1977, despite opposition from the Western Australian State School Teachers Union, the Government reversed the decision to register teachers. The Board continued to meet under the terms of the Act until it was repealed late in 1978.
