History

Yalgoo is situated in the Murchison Goldfields area of Western Australia. The area was gazetted as Yalgoo Goldfield in 1895, followed by the townsite (spelled Yalgu in the original gazettal) and road district in 1896. The road district was abolished in August 1911 and portions incorporated into Mount Magnet and Upper Irwin Road Districts. However Board meetings continued to be held until 4 January 1912.

Yalgoo was named after the nearby Yalgoo Peak, discovered by John Forrest in 1876. The word is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'blood' or 'place of blood'. The indigenous bush in the area has a blood red sap.
