Administrative history

Formerly the Department of Works & Buildings, the Public Works Department expanded greatly from the beginning of the century, becoming responsible for the construction of the Goldfields Water Supply and Fremantle harbour. The Public Works Department changed its name to the Building Management Authority on 1 January 1985.

Administrative history

The work of the Department of Local Government consisted of general supervision and guidance of the activities of local authorities, by-laws, holding of auditing accounts, perusing of alterations, recommending approval of some appointments.

Following on from recommendations handed down by the Machinery of Government Taskforce, the functions of the Department of Local Government were merged with the regional functions of the former Department of Commerce and Trade on 1 July 2001 to form a new department - the Department of Local Government and Regional Development.

Each Road Board was required to complete a form prescribed under the Road Districts Act 1919 and under the authority of the Statistics Act 1907 to provide an annual financial statement. The completed forms note particulars such as the miles of road in the district, the number of bridges, footpaths, lights, the population, etc. as well as providing a summary of receipts and payments.

Completed forms were bound in volumes annually. The volumes are indexed by Road Board.
