Administrative history

The State Housing Commission was established under the State Housing Commission Act 1946. This act abolished the previous Worker's Homes Board.

The functions of the Commission were to:

  • provide for the erection and disposal of houses;

  • provide financial advances for housing, and;

The Housing Act 1980 repealed the 1946 Act, increased the Commission from five members to seven members and allowed the Commission to purchase land for the purposes of the Act.

Scope and content

This series consists of housing plans produced by architectural staff of the Workers Homes Board/State Housing Commission and transferred to the State Records Office between 1986 & 1988.

The numerical coding of individual plans was imposed by the State Housing Commission to facilitate retrieval after microfilming. The code is used to denote items in the listings (i.e. Year/Building type/Building details/Number within year. e.g. 42/012714 = single house, purpose built, drawing no. 14 of 1942).

Each consignment in this series reflects differences in building details:

Consignment 4963 = Standard drawings used for the construction of individual houses;

Consignment 4964 = McNess Trust houses;

Consignment 4965 = One-off housing drawings;

Consignment 4966 = Reconstructed group cottages; and

Consignment 5017 = Goldfields cottages.
