Administrative history

The Western Australian Government Railways [1] was established following the abolition of the Dept of Works & Railways and the creation of the WAGR and the Dept of Works & Buildings. In 1914 the function of tramways was added and the Department's title changed accordingly.

In 1914 it was decided to add the function of tramways to the WAGR and the agency title was changed accordingly.

A name change occurred again in 1922 to reflect responsibility for the additional function of electricity supply.

Scope and content

Cards maintained by Western Australian Government Railways relating to the testing of water used by steam trains in dams along railway routes. The cards are arranged alphabetically under the name of the town where the dam is located and record the results of testing for chemicals, particularly chlorides, and salt levels in the dam water.
The series finished about 1980 when diesel trains had totally replaced steam.
