Administrative history

Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

Scope and content

Daily report kept by the chief warder. Shows date, names of warders, numbers of prisoners received or discharged, names and registration numbers of prisoners being transferred, received, discharged etc, whether the Superintendent visited or phoned, details of the evening muster (number of males, number of females). Early volumes were titled Chief Warder's Journal.

Cons 4659 is mainly a record of prisoners' hospital appointments and admissions.
