Administrative history

Rottnest Island was used by government officials as a place of imprisonment for the period 1838 to 1932. An Aboriginal prison operated on the island between 1838 to 1904.

In 1848, the majority of prisoners were transferred to the mainland but in 1855 the Rottnest Establishment was reopened.

By the late 1800s, non Aboriginal prisoners were also being to Rottnest Island and in 1904 it officially became an annexe of Fremantle Prison until 1932.

Commitment Books for Aboriginal prisoners sent to Rottnest Island.

The volumes record prisoner registration number, name, date of commitment, date of arrival, crime, sentence, tribe, magistrate, when due for discharge, when discharged.

Occurrence Book 25 also includes information for male children sent to the Boys Reformatory at Rottnest Island at the rear of the volume. It records the registration number, name, date of commitment, offence, sentence, remarks.
