History

The Convict Finance Board was formed to prevent "an improvident expenditure in the Convict Department of Western Australia", following instructions received from the Secretary of State in 1851 (Minutes, Cons. 1156/FB1). The Board consisted of three members - the Colonial Secretary, the Comptroller General and the Acting Commissariat General. One of their first motions was to approve the appointment of a paid secretary to take control of the books and keep the accounts. The Board considered applications for the expenditure of funds, payment to be made from the Convict Establishment account.
