Administrative history
In 1843 a Road Committee of 5 members was formed "to construct and manage roads and other internal communications" in the York District. This operated until 1871 when the York Road District was gazetted. The first election was held at noon on Saturday 18 February 1871 at the York Court House with W. Cowan, Resident Magistrate, York as the returning officer. Under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1960, all Road Boards became Shires as from 1 July 1960.
