Scope and content
This series consists of letters received by the Crown Land and Surveys Department from settlers.
R. Cecil Clifton, Chief Clerk, introduced a new system of registering letters in February 1881. Under this system letters were registered under one of four headings - 'A' for settlers, 'B' for officials, 'C' for surveyors and 'D' for applicants for employment. A fifth sequence - 'T' for telegrams was also introduced. In the following year, 1882, Clifton advised that the records would be numbered in an annual number sequence, and filed in that order, but with a cross reference to the heading system.
The letters were reorganized in the 1980s by the Department of Lands and Surveys, taking them out of their numbered sequence and reordering them so that related letters were brought together. Some letters may be filed within the other sequences. The listings show which letters are included in each set.
(Files in this Record Series include records that were previously listed at the State Records Office at reference AN 3/3, Accession 541).
