History
On the 1 July 1992 the Department of Mines became the Department of Minerals and Energy. The department combined all the functions of the old Dept of Mines; the Minerals and Energy Research Institute of WA (MERIWA); the Energy Policy and Planning Bureau and the Renewable Energy Advisory Council.
The Department of Minerals and Energy maintained records of minerals/petroleum tenements, exploration and production; was concerned with safety and environmental impact of mineral/petroleum activities and explosives and dangerous goods; provided geological, chemical and engineering advice; participated in energy requirements and conservation; and participated in development of new minerals and energy technology.
On 1 July 2001, the Department of Minerals and Energy and the Department of Resources Development were merged to form the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
