Administrative history
Houses were first built on Koolan Island in 1961 to house iron ore workers. Shortly afterwards BHP made a house available for schooling. The Education Department then agreed to build a school and this was officially opened on 15 March 1962. The Koolan Island Primary School closed at the end of December 1992 following the cessation of iron ore production on the island.

Includes - brochures containing school information relating to fund-raising such as a marathon and a mardi-gras in 1991 and 1992. These records were transferred when the school closed at the end of 1992. The State Archives imposed a numerical system of control.
