AU WA A1946 - HUGH CAREY BARCLAY
Hugh Carey Barclay (1905 - 1997) was a registered and licensed surveyor working for the Western Australian Lands and Surveys Department. In 1935 -1937 he led three expeditions to the Kimberley region to accurately survey the 129th Meridian, the boundary between Western Australia and the Northern Territory. He later was Director of Lands, Northern Territory.
In 1922 the Commonwealth government and the state governments of South and Western Australia agreed to a survey to determine the exact position of the 129th meridian, marking the boundary of Western Australia with the Northern Territory and South Australia. Hugh Barclay was appointed as the leader of various survey exhibitions along the meridian.
