In 1946 responsibility for electricity was given to a separate authority. In 1949, the Department was abolished and two new departments were created - the Department of Railways (2) and the Western Australian Government Tramways & Ferries.

The represents an example of the sort of work records kept by gangers and includes gangers day books which detail the number of gangers working on a particular job and the work undertaken; notebook with details of culverts laid on a section of the Miling line; and a notebook with tests for platelaying construction work. The diaries were received from Mr Norwood, a former WAGR employee.
