Administrative history
The Library Board of Western Australia was established under the provisions of the Library Board of Western Australia Act 1951 which came into force by proclamation on 30 September 1952. The functions of the Board initially were: to encourage and assist local authorities to establish free public libraries; to coordinate those public libraries into a State wide system; to allocate subsidies to public libraries; to provide for the training of librarians and assistant librarians; and to advise the Minister for Education and participating bodies on matters of general policy relating to libraries.
