The Court of Petty Sessions - Perth has been under the official umbrella of the Perth Magistrates Court since 1991. In May 2005 the Petty Sessions and Local Courts were formally amalgamated.
Established in 1830 to deal with summary offences which did not require a jury, it was sometimes known as the Perth Police Court. In addition to its judicial functions the Court has, in the past, dealt with matters relating to convicts, liquor licences and child maintenance.

A Licencing Court within the Perth Police Court was empowered to enforce the regulations of Acts relating to the sale of fermented and spirituous liquors (e.g. Public House Ordinance Act of 1856; Wines, Beers and Spirits Act of 1872; etc). The Licencing Court generally comprised three Justices of the Peace, one of whom was the Resident Police Magistrate who acted as ex officio Chairman. The first reference in the Government Gazette to such a court meeting in Perth was on the 24 December 1836.
