Scope and content
The Magistrates Reports recorded the weekly activities of the various District or Resident Magistrates. Each report is arranged in days and has columns for "Journeys or Public Business: Places from and to which, Miles" which were used in obtaining a mileage allowance, "Orders given to Police", and " Business transacted". One column has no heading. Each report is signed by the Resident Magistrate, often at the principal town or place of the district.
The reports were sent to the Colonial Secretary's Office. Bound into volumes (and previous finding aids reflected this arrangement) several pages were incorrectly placed, either by date or district. Preservation of the reports required debinding, and the reports were re-sorted prior to microfilming. The folio numbering used in the volumes has been left as a pencil annotation on the upper right corner to assist with identification from older references.
