Administrative history

Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

Scope and content

Volume of medical certificates of the cause of death of prisoners. Deaths recorded between 1895 - 1899 are for Rottnest, between 1931 - 1942 are for Fremantle Prison. Where the medical certificate has been issued only the butt remains showing details including name, age, date last seen,date of death, place of death, cause of death, signature and date. There are a number of blank forms in the book. Deaths on Rottnest appear to be of aborigines.
