The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade was created on 25 October 1988, bringing together the Technology and Industry Development Authority (TIDA), the Countertrade Office, the Overseas Relations Office (ORO), the Industrial Lands Development Authority (ILDA) and the Department of Resources Development (DRD).
The Technology and Industry Development Authority and a new Department of Trade Development, incorporating the Office of Countertrade and the Overseas Relations Office, became sub-departments of the Department of the Ministry under the powers contained in sections 21 and 22 of the Public Service Act. The Department of Resources Development remained a sub-department of the Ministry from 25 October 1988 until 1 July 1989.
The mission of the Ministry was to promote maximum sustainable economic development within WA.
The title of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade was amended to that of the Ministry of Economic Development on 1 July 1990.
