Administrative history
During the latter half of the 19th Century, Mandurah formed part of the Murray Region, coming under the auspices of the Murray Road Board. Over a number of years, sections of the Murray region had been established as separate shires and the last to be annexed was Mandurah. Mandurah Road Board was formed in mid-1949 controlling an area between the coast and Peel estuary, as well as Mandurah itself. These boundaries would later be realigned when the Board became a Shire Council in 1961.

Administrative history
After an investigation into Board affairs and on the advice of the Minister for Local Government, Mandurah Road Board members resigned in 1956 and a Commissioner was appointed to handle the affairs of the town. The Mandurah Road Board was reconstituted on the 26 April 1960 and almost a year later on 1 July 1961, the gazettal of the Mandurah Shire Council was effected in accordance with the Local Government Act 1960.
