Administrative history

Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

Daily occurrence books for various sections or divisions within the prison.
Occurrence books for different divisions are in separate consignments.
Cons 4259 seems to be a general occurrence book and shows numbers of inmates at morning and evening muster with breakdown into numbers in main division, new division, hospital, Refactory cells. Also shows names of discharges, transfers and those appearing in court.

Cons 4261/1 is the last volume for the Special Cells as this department closed on 13.1.1967 and the two inmates were transferred to New Division.
