The Animal Resources Centre (ARC) was initially established in 1981 as a Statutory Authority under the Animal Resources Authority Act 1981.
The role of the ARC was to breed and rear laboratory animals, and to acquire specialised laboratory animals, free of disease and to supply to institutions and bodies for teaching, research or diagnostic purposes.
