The Western Australian Government Railways, Tramways & Ferries was abolished in 1949 and its functions dispersed to the new bodies - Western Australian Government Railways (2) and Western Australian Government Tramways & Ferries.

The papers were donated to the Battye Library by the W.A.G.R Accounts & Audit Branch in May 1966 under Acc. 1386A. Then transferred to the State Records Office in October 2016 as part of the Separation of Collection project 2016.

Scope and content
Stamps for the pre-payment of freight on parcels and newspapers carried by the Western Australian Government Railways were brought into use in 1905. The examples in this collection were in use in February 1966 when decimal currency commenced in Australia.
