Administrative history

To act as a Board of advice to the agriculturalists of the colony. Functions included:


  • establishment of experimental stations throughout the colony;


  • making analyses of typical soils;


  • disseminating meteorological information;


  • improving the dairying and livestock industries;


  • preventing the adulteration of chemical manures;


  • introducing and distributing new varieties of fodder plants, cereals and fruit trees;


  • excluding or eradicating insect pests and introducing new and improved mechanical appliances for use in agricultural pursuits.

Archival history

Photos were originally donated to the Battye Library under Acc. 5458B, then transferred to the State Records Office in October 2016 as part of the Separation of Collection project 2016. Original call numbers are reflected in the item numbering.

Scope and content

Photographs from Department of Agriculture and predecessor agencies, including black and white originals, prints and postcards. Some photographs have been copied from other albums and agencies. Topics include the Carr-Boyd expedition to Mt Charles (see AU WA S50- cons3423 104 - Route Laverton to Mt Charles taken from the notes of W. Carr Boyd, 1904.), the Trans-Australian Railway and prospecting as well as more usual agricultural topics.
