Administrative history
Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1855, and was first occupied in 1855. The Prison was closed in 1991 when the last prisoners were transferred to the new prison at Casuarina.

This collection of female prisoner photographs covers Fremantle Prison registrations F556 - F1720 but the collection is very incomplete.
There are app. 767 photographs in total, with photographs taken of the prisoners between the 1920s - 1960s.
